Lot 2034
1871-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. A nice coin with a hint of light toning. Several years ago this handsome 1871-CC was offered in a Heritage sale (9/2003) where it was described as "Winter 1-B. Although its mintage of 20,770 pieces is comparatively high for a Carson City Half Eagle, the '71-CC is a difficult issue in all grades and a significant condition rarity, with pieces grading as high as XF representing an extremely desirable grade for the issue. In the Akers' book on Half Eagles and in the Winter/Cutler reference on Carson City gold coins, just two Mint State 1871-CC fives are mentioned by the authors, the best known being the Akers' plate coin, a veteran of two apostrophe sales (Auction '79 and Auction '80). This Condition Census representative is a bright yellow-gold with adequate sharpness on the central details. A pair of tiny round marks above the top arrow point could serve as a pedigree marker in the future." NGC #394886-008. Pop 4; 2 finer; 1 in 61; 1 in 63.

1874-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. Rich golden toning. Amazing lustrous surfaces for this rarity from Carson City Mint, the fields and devices are alive with rich gold and tawny brilliance. Nicely struck for the date, too, with nearly all reverse details present, though nothing approaching "full" can be found on an 1874-CC half eagle. The surface condition is what concerns us here, and should entice bidders to put in a good show when the time comes, since the fields as well as the devices are simply outstanding! 21,198 coins minted. Pop 9; 6 finer; 4 in 58; 2 in 62. (PCGS # 8334) .

Lot 2038
1874-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Untoned. Scarce "CC" date. A couple of small marks on the jaw. A very-fresh beauty and one of only a small population at the high end of the grading scale. Level, smooth surfaces occur on both sides, with luster around the devices and well into the fields, very faint traces of pale orange gold mingle on the clean (but definitely not "cleaned") surfaces. "Clean" as in mark-free. Nicely struck, too, and unlike those which have the more than a touch of weakness at the centers, particularly on the eagle, and so annoying to the perfectionist, this exemplary coin is bold. The photos show this feature well, but first-hand experience using a magnifying glass is best. For it is here that this 1874-CC's beauty and superiority really shines! Only 21,198 minted. Pop 12; 12 finer in 58.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Lot 2039
1874-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Untoned. Some original luster luster plays on warm honey gold surfaces. Choice and problem-free for the grade, with only the tiniest of marks present when viewed under low magnification. Another notable rarity from the Carson City Mint.

The norm for the 1874-CC is a well-circulated coin, VF or EF. Anything higher is especially rare. Regarding the AU grade, Douglas Winter and Lawrence Cutler, suggest that this is in the middle range of Rarity-7, with, perhaps, six to eight pieces known in all of the numismatic world. The present coin aptly suited to a high-quality U.S. gold date set and was among the choicer examples our consignor able to locate. It will be a treasure in the cabinet of its next owner. 21,198 coins minted. Pop 9; 24 finer.

1882-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. A very rare Carson City five that is prohibitively rare above Extremely Fine. This is one of the finer pieces known, in mint state only very few coins have been certified by both major services. Furthermore, the coin is a well struck example that is similar in appearance to the other CC tens in this sale in that it appears completely original, and shows distinctive light of "antique gold" patina on the devices. 82,817 minted. 1885 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. This gleaming fresh 1885 Liberty half eagle, an "ultra" cameo frosted beauty, takes its place in the short line up of surviving choice Proof gold coins in the present century. The devices are very bold and are, for that matter, ultra frosty -- and that's a comfort -- accenting the portrait, eagle, and other features against a field of "orange peel" mirror beauty. The textured mirror surface is characteristic of gold of this period, but for some reason not seen as prevalent on the copper or silver Proofs. One or two faint hairlines do not disturb the atmosphere of serene beauty and joy this coin produces on the first-hand viewer. It is every bit a gorgeous specimen.

Only 66 Proofs were reported struck in 1885, probably fewer than half this number exist today. That being the case, only a handful could possibly hold a candle to this lovely Proof 64 with its ultra cameo-jewel devices. NGC #1500894-010. Only 66 proofs minted. Pop 1; 4 finer; 3 in 66; 1 in 67.

1890-CC $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Semi reflective surfaces, Nicely toned. Evenly balanced toned mint frost with a nice balance of color and "antique" toning, a very attractive 1890-CC example. Desirable with this meticulous strike, there are full stars and hair curls, with a nice edge to Liberty's coronet, all areas were the first signs of a weak strike will occur. But 1890-CC half eagles, scarce though they are, tend to be well made, which is a blessing. Pop 20; 94 finer. (PCGS # 8376) .

1891 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo Triple Struck with Reverse Rotation. A unique mint error in gold and in proof condition. NGC #1876204-001. This is an incredibly important Proof half eagle that was triple struck with rotation between strikes on the reverse. The obverse does not show any indication of the extra impressions from the die. The first and second imprint of the design on the reverse are visible in a counterclockwise arrangement relative to the third impression. In addition to the magnitude of this example from the extra strikes, it is also a Proof Gold rarity, one of just 53 examples coined in Proof format. Further, the 1891 half eagle is also a low mintage issue as a business strike, creating a situation where the overall rarity is an key factor when considering the collector pressure on this issue.

Different sources suggest varying survival rates for this issue. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen posited that around 25 to 30 different Proofs of this issue may exist in collectors' hands, representing about 60% of the recorded mintage. Including resubmissions, NGC and PCGS have combined to certify 45 examples. Perhaps this figure does coincide with the Breen survival estimate. We have handled only a few 1891 Proofs of the half eagle, a check of our archives indicates that this it has been well over a decade since we last offered a Proof example of this date; several more instances pop up in the late 1980s to early 1990s, but in all of our sales this has consistently been a "sleeper" Proof. A complete and accurate roster of known examples has not been attempted, to the best of our knowledge, and would be difficult to accomplish. So many of the gold Proofs are similar in appearance that plate matching over many years of auction offerings is rendered quite difficult. Of course, the condition of this example with its remarkable tripled reverse is unmistakable. We suspect that this particular example, with its extra design impressions, is unique.

The surfaces have light yellow-gold color with mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices. A few light contact marks are visible on each side. There is a small black spot just above Liberty's eyebrow and a couple others on the obverse rim. These minor blemishes limit the grade and keep it from Gem quality. The devices are highly lustrous with frosty light yellow color. A few small lint marks attest to the Proof status of this coin. One of these is located just below star 4. The most noticeable evidence of triple striking on the reverse is in the fields around the eagle, especially in the open areas above the eagle and below the motto. Certain of the letters in the motto and denomination are also tripled with this evidence weak but visible. The fields themselves have the wavy or watery appearance so often seen on Proof gold coins. This is truly an amazing ultra cameo Proof with exceptional eye appeal and a high degree of desirability.
